Featured Festival: Governor’s Art Show (& Gala)

For the second year in a row, the Governor’s Art Show is being featured on HeidiTown and I couldn’t be more honored. Whether you are a lifelong art collector, or just a casual art observer, this is the art show for you.

Governor’s Art Show & Sale, May 4 – June 15, 2014

Gala, May 3 (purchase tickets here)

My husband,  Ryan Schlaefer, is one of the most talented artists I know. Despite the fact that he’s an artist and I draw stick people, we both love art, and during our travels around Colorado and beyond, we frequently visit art galleries and art shows. This is how I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the Governor’s Art Show & Sale, taking place annually in Loveland, Colorado for more than two decades, is one of the best around.

The Colorado artists who are chosen to participate in this prestigious event have eye-opening and awe-inspiring talent. This is the kind of show you may want to visit more than once. My husband and I enjoyed last year’s show so much that I even blogged about it over on  his website’s blog here.

The Gala takes place May 3, and is your chance to rub shoulders with fellow art lovers, as well as the artists themselves. The show is presented by the  Rotary Club of Loveland  and the  Thompson Valley Rotary Club. It is a major fundraiser for both clubs whose mission is to help local and global neighbors through volunteerism and philanthropy. In addition to being a fundraiser, the two clubs have paid over $2 million to Colorado artists over the years.

Several of our favorite artists from last year are back. Be sure to check out the work of  Tiffany Miller Russell. Her medium is cut paper and you have to see her work to truly understand the patience it must take to complete her projects.

Another truly astounding artist who is back this year is  Julie Bender, who paints with fire – literally. The technique is called “pyrography.” When you go, do not miss  Mark Thompson‘s work. Trust me, you will be amazed.

I could go on and on about the artists who will be showing at the Governor’s Art Show & Sale, but you have to experience this event for yourself, and plan to spend a little time. This isn’t a show you’ll want to rush through, but rather I encourage you to savor the experience.

The Show and Sale runs May 4 through June 15 and is held at the Loveland Museum Gallery, open Tuesdays and Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays, 12 to 4 p.m. On Second Friday, Loveland’s monthly art walk, the museum is open from 6 to 9 p.m. The gallery exhibit fee is just $5, with no gallery fees on May 22 and June 4.

FREE ART THEATER SHOW starring Loveland-based artist Scott Freeman scheduled for Saturday, May 3 from 1 to 2 p.m. at Bill Reed Middle School. I’ve seen Freeman perform and his work is astounding. Go to the event website for more information.
