Heidis viking impression at Ullr Fest 2013

Yep, it’s that time of year again, Ullr Festival is almost here. This crazy event takes place for an entire week (January 5-11, 2014). We attended for the first time last year, when I was asked to be a judge of the Ullr Festival Parade. I’m judging again this year and I can’t wait. Ryan and I loved every minute of Ullr Festival and we made friends everywhere we went

If you’ve been paying attention, by now you probably know that I was invited by GoBreck to judge the 50th Annual Ullr Festival parade last week in Breckenridge, Colorado. After looking through our parade photos, taken mostly by my husband, Ryan, I just had to share a few of our favorites with you. Enjoying the 2013 Estes Park Winter Festival with a famous friend.

Four years ago, Ryan and I decided to go snowshoeing in Rocky Mountain National Park, and afterwards we stopped in Estes Park and stumbled into what has become one of our favorite winter festivals. At that time the Estes Park Winter Festival was a small affair, a lot of local cooks serving up chili and just a few beer and wine vendors, but what fun we had. We tasted every

Party like a viking with me in Breckenridge, Colorado! For half a century the people of Breckenridge have been donning horns and participating in a huge party inspired by Ullr, the Norse God of Winter. In Europe, Ullr is the Guardian of Skiers, and the gods know I will need him during my skiing adventure in Breckenridge this season. Originally developed as a party for the people of Breckenridge, Ullr

I wanted to share these amazing pictures with you. My friend Chase Squires took these photos of the ski ramp that was constructed for the Denver Big Air Event that’s happening today and tomorrow in downtown Denver. These photos show the scale of this gigantic construction project. This ramp stands 106 feet tall and is located in Civic Park. It is part of the Nature Valley Big Air Challenge, an

Oatmeal Festival in Lafayette, Colorado (Jan. 8, 2011)

I have no idea why Lafayette, Colorado celebrates oatmeal, maybe by next year’s festival I’ll have gotten to the bottom of that bowl, I mean mystery. The celebration includes a 5K run, followed by oatmeal and pancake eating, followed by an oatmeal baking competition and a health fair. Here’s video of last year’s event: Lafayette Oatmeal Festival 2010, Big Black Lab Video, Inc. You’ll have to click on the link

Winter Trails at Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

I recently met a couple from Switzerland who said that Estes Park, Colorado reminded them of their home country. Estes Park is a charming little town nestled among snow-capped peaks and I can think of no better place for a Winter festival. The 2nd Annual Estes Park Winter Festival is a four-day extravaganza, has everything a winter festival should have and more. The event kicks off on Friday evening with

Fruitcake Toss in Manitou Springs, Colorado

FRUITCAKE 1) a rich cake containing nuts, dried or candied fruits and spices, 2) a crazy or eccentric person. TOSS 1) to throw, pitch or fling. Love it or hate it, the fruitcake has become a staple of American culture and this Saturday, January    8, the small town of Manitou Springs, Colorado celebrates their 16th Annual Fruitcake Toss. Manitou Springs is one of the Mayor’s favorite Colorado towns, in
