A Perfect Getaway

Film Review A Perfect Getaway

Rated R

Directed by David Twohy

Starring Steve Zahn, Timothy Oyphant, Milla Jovovich, Kiele Sanchez, Marly Shelton

Heidi’s Illustrious Rating: 3/5 (Honestly, this one probably deserves a lower rating, but I wasn’t expecting to like it and I did, and this type of unexpected surprise can skew my rating system)

Word of Warning: Some scary stuff, but this isn’t a gruesome thriller.

Cliff and Cyndey are newlyweds – he’s a screenwriter on the verge of a successful career and she’s looking forward to starting a family and being a mom. But first, they are off a Hawaii, and looking to experience the perfect honeymoon.

Cliff (Steve Zahn) is a practical, do-things-by-the-book sort of guy, while Cydney (Milla Jovovich) is a fun-loving gal with a quirky sense of adventure. The two Californians aren’t outdoorsy types, but after spying a beautiful mountain trail while taking a helicopter ride over the island of Kauai, they decide to attempt the 11-mile hike.

They hit the trail in high spirits, quickly forgetting the strange couple they almost gave a ride to on the road to the trailhead. Near the beginning of the trail they run into a group of college girls who are near hysteria. There’s been a double murder of a honeymooning couple on the island of Oahu, and the two murders, thought to be a man and woman traveling together, are believe to still be somewhere on the Hawaiian Islands. The college girls’ families want them to come home immediately.

Momentarily frightened, Cliff and Cydney decide to hike onward. After all, they are now hiking with Nick (Tim Olyphant), an ex-military guy with Special Forces training. They intend to enjoy their honeymoon, and not let a little thing like a pair of roving murderers stop their good time. Fate, however, has other plans.

Far from perfect, this movie is simple entertainment, and doesn’t claim to be anything more. If this were the only movie you were going to see this year, I wouldn’t recommend it. It is sort of a B-movie produced with a big budget – there’s great scenery, beautiful girls in short shorts and average, at times silly, performances. If this style appeals to you, “A Perfect Getaway,” just might prove to be a fun evening get away for you and your honey.
