me & xena in the snow

It’s the day before Thanksgiving and that means means people are driving, flying, cooking and visiting and most likely two or three of you will actually read this post today. So I’ve put off writing about the Colorado Railroad Museum, and instead I’m going to write a kitschy Thanksgiving post. I am going to share with you a few random things I’m really thankful for starting with books on tape.

First 14er Mt. Democrat

This Thursday is Thanksgiving,  so of course, on this week’s radio segment on KRFC 88.9 FM, I’m sharing with listeners the things I’m most thankful for, and of course, I’ve added a Colorado twist. I’m also sharing with my radio listeners some of the exciting changes that are happening around HeidiTown, and that includes more emphasis on Colorado travel. Listen to the show HERE. Happy Thanksgiving, citizens!

denver city & county building holiday lights

As much as I love small towns, during the holidays I love taking a trip to the big city. One of my fondest Christmas memories is walking under the canopy of lights on Larimer in downtown Denver. We were checking out all the window decorations and that year they were all ski scenes. Some were very elaborate with skiers moving up and down paper mache mountains and ice skaters twirling

denver arts week logo 2012

Nothing destroys the stereotype of being a cow town, like Denver Arts Week. Denver is a hub of arts and culture and during this week long celebration, every type of artistic medium is celebrated including visual arts, theater, music, film, museums, dance, opera comedy, history and heritage. Get walking, get artsy The event kicks off on November 2 with First Friday Art Walks in numerous neighborhoods around town. A list

Channel your inner Bob Ross at a paint while you drink studio

HeidiTown is about festivals, events and destinations in Colorado, and this post falls under the “events” category. Last month, we were invited to a friend’s birthday party at one of these new drink while you paint studios that are popping up all over the country. Google “paint & drink studios” and you’ll get about 1 million results. When we got invited to this party, I was not exactly excited. I

coffin races Manitou Springs Colorado

Let’s be frank, Manitou Springs is quirky, and sometimes downright weird, but that’s a big part of why I like it. We’ve done several weekend trips to Manitou over the years, and it’s always a memorable experience. In fact, if you follow me on Twitter, the blue-haired lady I use as an avatar is from a photo I took in Manitou of a pinball machine. Located just 15 minutes west

fall flowers in Colorado

For those of you who may be new to HeidiTown, each week I have a radio segment on KRFC 88.9 FM in Fort Collins, Colorado. It’s a community-ran public radio station broadcasting around Northern Colorado and beyond. My HeidiTown segments run on Wednesday around 12:30 p.m. and Friday at 5:30 p.m. This week I share about some fun things happening around Northern Colorado in September, including a car show this

Gondola in Telluride

Colorado is now home to the most challenging cycling race in the United States, the US Pro Cycling Challenge. The race is 683 miles, attracts world class cyclists and winds its way through some of Colorado’s most charming towns. There are 126 riders in the race from 24 countries including Boulder, Colorado’s own Taylor Phinney, who secured two fourth place finishes at the London, Olympics. The US Pro Challenge gets

Grand Adventures Balloon Tours

There are few things lovelier than watching a hot air balloon silently gliding across the horizon on an early morning in Colorado. We are lucky to have quite a few hot air balloons flying around our state, and multiplel festivals celebrating this French flying contraption. In this week’s radio segment on  KRFC 88.9 FM, I talk abut balloon festivals in Colorado and take a look at one balloon rally that

hot air balloon

As you might imagine, I go to a lot of events and festivals, and quite frankly, a lot of them look the same – beer garden, food vendors, kids’ area, 5K, pancake breakfast. This isn’t necessarily bad, especially in smaller communities, but theming a festival really makes the event stand out above the others. One such event is happening the first weekend in August in Loveland, Colorado – and this
