Movie Review of "Australia" – Where's the real beef?

australia

Rated PG13

Directed by Baz Lurhmann

Starring Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, David Wenham, Bryan Brown, Jack Thompson

Heidi’s Illustrious Rating: 2.5

Word of Warning: This is a really long movie and it feels really long.

“Australia” is a big movie, about a big country, with a big history. It strives to be a love story, an historical drama, a war movie, an epic – unfortunately, these attempts at grandeur are the movie’s downfall.

  1. Any movie which references “The Wizard of Oz” gets on my good side for the obvious reason …

I found “Australia” old fashioned in a very good sense, but as you said the first half hour is tough to stomach. But Hollywood makes so few movies of this type that we have to embrace ’em when we see ’em.

  2. I guess it’s sort of like why I like songs that mention redheads… 🙂

I think I understand your sentiment, but with all the CGI I have a hard time thinking of it as “old fashion.”

  3. I went along not realizing it’s crossed the line into chick flick territory. I think the director is more than a little obsessed with Hugh’s body. He looked like Fabio on the cover of a romance novel thoughout the entire move. Agree “rabbit proof fence” or there’s another one called snowy mountains or something like that that is pretty good too, but that’s REALLY old. You probably know what i’m talking about 😉
