"Clue" by Candlight

Being a true fan of dinner theater, I’ve been anxious to visit this relatively new playhouse located just off I25 near the famous Johnson’s Corner in Johnstown, Colorado. I’d heard the 6 million dollar facility is fantastic inside and I was not disappointed; the place is outstanding. I felt like I’d just walked out of Northern Colorado and into a Broadway playhouse.   Dinner seating begins at 6 p.m. and

"Sherlock Holmes" - Detective or superhero?

Rated PG13 Directed by Guy Richie Starring Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Mark Strong, Eddie Marsan Heidi’s Illustrious Rating: 2.5/5 Word of Warning: May be a bit scary for little ones.   Excessive use of CGI. This movie is Guy Richie’s reinterpretation of Sherlock Holmes, the famous British detective who uses his mind to outwit criminals and solve crimes. Does the fact Richie is a Brit make him

Top 5 Movies of 2009

This was a very hard list to compile. I contemplated making it a top 3 list, because that would have been much easier. In my opinion, a truly good movie has to be outstanding in multiple categories, including directing, acting, and storyline. That is why you will not find “Avatar” on my list. “The Hurt Locker” – This movie, by Kathryn Bigalow, has an intense storyline, great acting and  flawless

"Up in the Air" - a film grounded in reality

Rated R Directed by Jason Reitman Starring George Clooney, Vera Farmiga, Anna Kendrick, Jason Bateman, Danny McBride Heidi’s Illustrious Rating: 4/5 Word of Warning: Lots of product placement in this movie, sometimes distracting from what is otherwise a great film. Before I expound on “Up in the Air” I want to make a statement. Apparently American Airlines paid a lot of money to be the featured airline in this film,

Golden Globes hangover

A while ago, a  fellow writer friend mentioned she enjoys watching the Golden Globes because everyone gets drunk.   Last night definitely lived up to the billing.   Even the greats including Meryl Streep and Harrison Ford seemed as though they’d indulged in more than a few cocktails during the event, and there was lots of  giggling during post-show interviews. “Avatar“ was the big winner, snagging both Best Director and

Books: Top picks of 2009

Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, Powell’s has been part of my bookstore going experience since childhood.   If you are a book lover  it’s worth a trip to Portland, Oregon to visit Powell’s Books.   The original store was open in 1971, and now there are six locations around Portland. I didn’t read much in 2009.   I started many books, but completed few, therefore I’ve  written very little

"Daybreakers" - couldn't really sink my teeth into it

Rated R Directed and written by The Spierig Brothers Starring Ethan Hawke, Willem Defoe, Sam Neill, Isabel Lucas, Claudia Karvan, Michael Dorman and Vince Colosimo Heidi’s Illustrious Rating: 2/5 Word of Warning: Blood and guts all over the place! In today’s climate vampires sell movies, and “Daybreakers” takes advantage of this trend, and although the premise is intriguing the story is not well executed. The year is 2019, and a

For the love of vampires

The People’s Choice Awards were last night and apparently the people like vampires. Despite their blood-sucking ways, the creatures of the night won big, and they’d better relish it, because this is the only awards show where “Twilight“ will walk away with Best Movie. This is slightly confusing, because technically, “Twilight“ came out in 2008, but who cares about technically?  This is the People’s Choice Awards! The “Twilight“ franchise and

A HeidiTown Favorite, The Elders, coming to Colorado

The Mayor’s all-time favorite band is coming to Colorado this week!   The Elders are a arse-kickin’ Celtic rock band from Kansas City.   I’ve been following this band for years and have seen them live more times than I can count.   I’ve  also  written multiple articles about them for HeidiTown and the Berthoud Weekly Surveyor.   I’m a pusher too – I buy their CDs as presents, and
