Three Comfy Colorado Cabin Getaways in the Mountains

When I was a kid, if my family wasn’t camping, we were staying in a cabin. Whether it was at a KOA in Ouray or a primitive cottage in Yellowstone, we were cabin people, and I still am.

Here are three very different Colorado cabin getaways in the mountains that I love.

A Cabin by the River

Fireside Inn Cabins, Pagosa Springs

We recently stayed in Cabin #7 at Fireside Inn Cabins in Pagosa Springs, Colorado during Winterfest. Open year round, these cabins are far from rustic. They offer all the conveniences of home including flat screen televisions and small kitchenettes.

During the summer, guests can bask in the sun on the banks of the San Juan River that flows next to the property. In the winter, there’s an enclosed hot tub for soaking weary muscles after a long day at Wolf Creek Ski Area, just 25 minutes away.

Fireside Inn Cabins is a dog-friendly property and there’s even a stable for those who travel with their horses.

Just two minutes north of Pagosa Springs, on the main drag, Fireside Inn Cabins is convenient to everything the town has to offer including delicious dining, hot springs pools, a terrific local theater and more.

A Cabin in the Woods

Avalanche Ranch Cabins & Hot Springs, Redstone

I don’t know whether it’s the sheep, the hot springs or the fact that cell phones don’t work here, but Avalanche Ranch is one of the most magical spots in Colorado.

The view from our cabin at Avalanche Ranch in Redstone, Colorado.

Located in a wooded area 15 minutes south of Carbondale, Avalanche feels more remote than it actually is. Carbondale boasts an array of tasty restaurants, two breweries, and a distillery.

Our studio cabin at Avalanche Ranch had a kitchen, bed, bathroom and loft area. The wood-burning stove and slightly slanted floor, only added to its charm.

I think I fell in love with Avalanche Ranch because of, and not in spite of having no wi-fi (except at the main lodge). This forced disconnection from technology made us feel more connected to the natural world around us, and it was magnificent.

A Cabin on a Ranch

Sylvan Dale Guest Ranch, Loveland

Located just an hour from Denver and minutes from Loveland, historic Sylvan Dale Guest Ranch offers a respite from real life, and you don’t have to book a full dude ranch experience to enjoy what this destination has to offer.

Guests can book a “bed and breakfast” style two-night stay in one of the ranch’s beautiful cabins. We stayed in the “Mr. Alexander,” which was akin to a first-rate hotel with a sitting area, bedroom and large bathroom with a beautiful claw foot tub. No one has to “rough it” at Sylvan Dale Guest Ranch.

Breakfast is included with your stay, and you can add on other amenities such as a trail ride. Or, if you’d rather, just kick back and relax on your cabin’s front porch with a book or explore Green Ridge on foot. This spectacular hike offers sweeping views of the entire area.

Cabins have a certain kind of charm that one does not find in a hotel room or condo. Perhaps it’s the coziness of a cabin or just childhood memories, but a stay in a Colorado cabin suits my style perfectly.
