Stay in Salida, Colorado: Stay Amigo Motor Lodge

I’ll admit, as a road tripper, I am a sucker for remodeled motels. Rundown and closed motels are often a blight in a town or city but if they have been saved and remodeled, they can be an asset in more ways than one.

Over the years, we’ve stayed in a handful of these places from Bellingham, Washington to Cortez, Colorado. I was overjoyed to discover that Salida has several of these gems.

We recently stayed at the Amigo Motor Lodge in Salida, Colorado, and it is one of these gems. It reopened in the summer of 2016. They have taken a 17-room, tired old motel and turned it into something wonderful. Check out their blog for the way it used to look (WOW! They’ve done A LOT of work).

This is an excellent addition to town. First, Salida is super dog-friendly (everyone has one) and Amigo Motor Lodge allows dogs. Second, it makes sense in Salida; the town has a laid back vibe and the motel has a laid back vibe. From Cocoon Hammock Chairs to our comfortable bed, everything about Amigo Motor Lodge says “come here and relax.”

In addition to motel rooms, they also have rentable Airstreams, two of which are pet-friendly. This is a creative way to add rooms as well as offer a unique experience. I mean, how else are you going to be able to stay in an Airstream unless you own one?

We were in dog-friendly room #5. Once you step foot inside these rooms you realize how much work and thoughtfulness has been put into this place. From the multiple plugs for devices to the affordable snack basket, nothing has been overlooked. In fact, we always bring our Amazon Fire Stick and this was the easiest television to plug into. There’s even a make-up mirror in the bathroom—winning! When you travel a lot, it’s the little things that make a big difference.

The check-in, check-out and morning coffee experience is a breeze. There are even a few morning nibbles to get your Arkansas Valley day off on the right foot.

As I mentioned above, there are Cocoon Hammock Chairs in the peaceful courtyard and I spent time in one every day. I love hammocks and as it turns out these are hammocks that include shelter from the elements and, much to my husband’s chagrin because he bought me a travel hammock, I now need a hammock chair.

Amigo Motor Lodge isn’t downtown, however, downtown Salida is just a few minutes away and you can walk from the motel to Soulcraft Brewing which is a real bonus.

Soulcraft was Fritzi’s third brewery.

Plus, this motel is only 0.4 miles to Gone to the Dogs and 0.7 miles to Loyal Duke’s Dog Park. This came in handy for us as this was Fritzi’s first road trip.

I like this motel a lot. If you are traveling with a dog, want to stay in an Airstream or are just looking for a relaxing and comfy place to lay your head, Amigo Motor Lodge is tops.

Thank you to Now This is Colorado for hosting our stay at Amigo Motor Lodge.
