This post is a little different, as I seldom highlight other bloggers. However, I feel OttsWorld not only deserves it, but I’ve gotten to know Sherry Ott personally, and I like her, so I know you will too.
She’s been blogging since 2006, and traveling the world. Sherry has done many things in many places, but I want to share with you her Capitol to Capitol quest and the kittens she fosters for the Dumb Friends League when she’s home in Denver, Colorado.
The Capitol to Capitol bike tour started with Sherry’s dad in 1984 when he was 47. He had a mission to visit each state capitol on foot following a counterclockwise road map that he made. Learn all about the project in Sherry’s video below.
As you can see, Sherry took up her dad’s Capitol to Capitol challenge, but instead of walking the routes, she decided to cycle between state capitols.
I’ve been watching this journey, especially through her Instagram stories. Not only is it a fascinating look at this country via backroads, and a great family story, but Sherry’s escapades like being chased by dogs in Texas, are entertaining. Sorry, Sherry. I know you wouldn’t say being chased by dogs was an entertaining experience!
A Road Trip to Southern Colorado
In a happy twist of fate, my path crossed with Sherry’s Capitol to Capitol route this weekend. Currently, Sherry is riding from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to Denver, Colorado. In fact, she’ll arrive in the Mile High City this Sunday, September 1.
We spent the weekend in the San Luis Valley, at the dog-friendly Frontier Drive-Inn. On Saturday night, Sherry, and her logistics queen for this route, Linda, were also there. Sherry calls the people who drive these routes while she rides them her “logistic queens.” I was excited to see her, especially as she is cycling a route right now. We didn’t take any photos together but had a great dinner at Three Barrel Brewing in Del Norte.
And we had a nice time watching a movie at Frontier Drive-Inn where we both stayed in yurts. More about the Frontier Drive-Inn experience on HeidiTown later. It’s a unique Colorado accommodation.
The next day, Sunday, August 25, we headed to Joyful Journey Hot Springs in Moffat, and Sherry and Linda headed back out on the road. Sherry was riding to Salida, Colorado, while we soaked the morning away. On our way home, we saw Sherry on the road. It was like a celebrity sighting for me. I’ve been watching this quest for a long time.
Sherry was riding over Poncha Pass on Hwy 285, a route we’ve driven many times, but have never cycled. I’m impressed with this epic adventure started by Sherry’s dad. When she arrives in Denver on Sunday (9/1/24) it will be her 8th completed Capitol to Capitol route. Her dad completed 23, leaving Sherry 26. That means she has 18 capitols left! So, you have plenty of time to join her on this challenge.
Honestly, I’m always excited when Sherry is home in Denver because her Instagram feed is full of kittens.
Go Sherry! Allez, Allez, Allez!
