5 Unique Colorado Inns that Should be on Your Radar

I’ve stayed at four out of five of these inns, and I toured the other one, so you can be assured that there is an authentic voice behind this post. These Colorado inns are all quite varied in price and ambiance, but they are each one-of-a-kind.

The Distillery Inn at Marble Distilling Co. – Carbondale

The Distillery Inn is the most luxurious property on this list. I had the great pleasure of staying there last month. When I say it’s “unique,” I’m not exaggerating – it’s the only distillery inn in the world.

The five rooms, located above the distillery, are top-notch. The ambiance of the entire place is laid back, yet elegant. My favorite detail of my room, the Ginger, were the daffodils in the bathroom and tulips in the main room. Continue reading

Best of HeidiTown 2016, Colorado Festivals & Travel

I used to call this annual post “Top 10 HeidiTown Highlights,” but I’m going to change it up this year because everyone loves a “Best Of” list, right? It’s a hard post for me to compose because every year seems to bring with it many incredible Colorado experiences. This makes it hard to boil an entire year down to ten major highlights, but every year I do it.

Trinidad, it's not what you think

Having a blast at Cardango, the ArtoCade’s evening, adults-only party.

This was a big year. I turned forty and we traveled a lot – to every corner of the state and the middle parts too. One of the major highlights was visiting Trinidad, Colorado (1) for ArtoCade, an art car extravaganza. This town blew us away. I love being surprised (in a good way) about a new place and I’m truly excited about the future of this friendly, quirky community.

Trinidad, Colorado. so much potential!

Another standout experience was staying at a Never Summer (2) yurt near Cameron Pass last winter with our old dog, Xena. We’d never stayed in a yurt, let alone during winter and it was terrific. I loved the smell of the wood burning stove and the feeling of total peace as I snuggled into our yurt’s queen bed. I didn’t even mind having to use the outhouse, something I usually hate with a fierce passion. Continue reading

A stay at Colorado Trail House in Leadville

Colorado Trail House offers something new to the traveler in a home that rings with echoes of the past.

Steeped in history, Leadvillle’s lively past is palpable on every visit to the town, and whether a visitor cares a whit about history or not, it’s all around them.

I have been visiting Leadville for nearly a decade, and on my most recent trip, I experienced many new Leadville sites and sounds that held echoes of past visits. This is the first in several posts about my latest Leadville adventure.

The first harmonization of the past and present was my booking at Colorado Trail House, a brand new lodging destination in Leadville that’s located in a not so new building. The Victorian home at 127 E. 8th Street has stood for more than 100 years, and while researching Colorado Trail House online before my visit, I realized that I’d been there before. Continue reading

A stay at Colorado’s only tiny home hotel

Ryan and I have been intrigued with the tiny home movement for many years. It stems from Ryan’s ability as a master craftsman to build one himself, after all, he could build one in his shop.

WeeCasa, Lyons, Colorado

Several weeks ago, we had the opportunity to stay at WeeCasa, a tiny home hotel in Lyons, Colorado.

Tiny homes are defined as houses under 400 square feet (some folks say under 600), and the “tiny house movement” is a description of the architectural and social movement that advocates living simply in small homes.

While living simply interests me to a degree, I’m more fascinated with the mobility of tiny homes and their small price tag when compared to standard home prices in Colorado.

Each of WeeCasa’s 17 tiny homes can be rented as “hotel rooms” per night or longer, and each is uniquely designed. If, like us, you’ve ever wondered about owning a tiny home, you’ll definitely want to experience a stay at WeeCasa. However, you don’t need to be a tiny home lover to utilize this place. Unique Lodging Options Near Colorado Springs

On our last trip to Colorado Springs, we experienced two very unique lodging properties – an historic hotel and an historic vacation home – and we enjoyed both.

Lodging in Manitou Springs, Colorado – The Cliff House at Pikes Peak

On our first night we were booked at The Cliff House at Pikes Peak, one of the region’s most distinguished and historic hotels.

We’d stayed at The Cliff House many years ago, and since that stay, my husband has always named The Cliff House as one of his favorite Colorado hotels.

We arrived in town near lunch time so our first stop was at Manitou Brewing Company. This brewery not only serves up noteworthy craft beer, but also gourmet food. I daresay this is the most foodie brewery I have ever visited. Continue reading
