Shop Local: The Mayor does a little shopping in downtown Loveland

I am going to come clean. I am not much of a shopper. In fact, I rarely shop unless it is a necessity. So when Christmas comes around, I enjoy shopping in historic downtowns, because the stores  are locally owned,  and they are entertaining. Downtown retail business owners have to be creative in order to compete with the strip malls and mega stores, and they often line their shelves with

"Native" exploring what it means to be a Coloradan

It is theater season folks, and you don’t have to go far because there’s lots of good theater happening right here in Northern Colorado. This past weekend I saw “Native,” in its first week at Nonesuch Theater in Fort Collins. Haven’t been there? Nonesuch is located at 216 Pine Street, just off College Avenue between Walnut and Jefferson. It was my first trip to Nonesuch, and this 49-seat theater is

Pourhouse opens in Loveland

Review originally published on August 20, 2009.   Downtown Loveland has a new restaurant at 124 E. 4th Street. The former Cipoletti’s  restaurant is now the PourhouseBar & Grill.    Pourhouse opened  yesterday, and I was there to check it out.   The first noticeable difference is the outside of the building – it has been painted black. The inside has been altered only slightly.   Walls have been removed

Major chain now offers free wi-fi

Barnes & Noble now offers free wi-fi, and it’s about time.   Many smaller coffee shops and bookstores beat B&N to the punch, but the  world’s largest  bookseller has finally come to their senses.   Free wi-fi is now available at all their stores. I go to the B&N at The Promenade Shops  in Loveland, and  one issue  I have with the place are the unhappy workers.  It’s service with

Gunther Toody's serves beer?

This past week I made an excellent discovery. Gunther Toody’s Diner serves beer. They serve it in a big giant mug called a “tiny.” If you are unfamiliar with Gunther Toody’s Diner, this is a Colorado chain where servers wear poodle skirts, blow bubbles with their gum, hula-hoop and have names like Sally, Jane, Aphelia and Sprout. The patrons of Gunther Toody’s are transported back to a time when Elvis

Are you ready for some football? HeidiTown's quest for the perfect sports bar

I enjoy supporting locally owned establishments and often persuade my readers to do the same. There is one particular part of my life where I fall short in this goal and that is during football season. Most locally owned joints can’t afford  the Sunday Ticket  and like all fantasy football players, my husband and I do not go out on a Sunday to watch the game. We go out to

You've forgotten - you love to bowl!

If you are anything like me, you bowl about once or twice a year.   I recently bowled with my husband on a Friday  evening date night  at Sweetheart Lanes in Loveland.   I  was reminded  – I love to bowl!   I’m not good at it and my form is probably atrocious.   I don’t think I’ve ever broken a 100.   But there’s something intrinsically fun about bowling.
