The key to blogging professionally is that you have to do it regularly. I typically blog two to three times a week, and I aim for three. Not an easy task since I am also a full-time freelance writer.
This week I was struck down with the plague, and when I’m sick I’m about as creative as a rock. And it takes more than a few ounces of creativity to do any writing, unless perhaps you’re writing a mathematics textbook.
When creativity has taken a backseat to a runny nose, some writers (me) turn to top five lists. The reason you see so many top 3 , top 5 or top 10 lists on the Internet is because they are relatively easy to put together, although I did have to ask my readers’ help via Facebook on this one.
One of the hosts at KRFC 88.9 FM, asked those of us with a show to put together the top three songs that we felt represented our programming. This got me thinking”¦ what three songs would I pick to represent HeidiTown?
With the help of my readers, I’ve come up with three tunes that represent HeidiTown. I’m sure there are more and I’d love to hear your thoughts.
1. Rocky Mountain High (1972), John Denver. I grew up with John Denver. Not WITH him, but his music was a staple in our house, and my dad, who is an accomplished guitarist, often played Denver’s song. “Rocky Mountain High” and “Thank God I’m a Country Boy“ are two of my favorite childhood tunes.
2. Feelin’ Groovy (1970), Simon & Garfunkel. This song and these musicians also played a large part in my childhood. I picked “Feeling Groovy” to represent HeidiTown because I think, while it’s very short, this happy tune should be on every road trip mixed tape (or playlist, since it is now 2014).
3. Colorado Girl (two versions). There’s a funny story about this song. A HeidiTown citizen on Facebook said this should be on the list, and when I googled the song title I thought she was referring to “Colorado Girl” by the country band, High Rollers. I’m a former country girl, Alan Jackson being one of my favorites, although I don’t know many of the younger, modern day country music stars. I checked out the High Rollers’ video and liked the song a lot. It’s upbeat, a bit humorous and there’s a fiddle. You can’t go wrong with a fiddle – that’s my motto.
Now for the funny part of the story. That particular citizen was actually referring to “Colorado Girl” by Townes Van Zandt circa 1969. This is also a very good tune, although I feel HeidiTown might be better represented by the High Rollers’ song.
